Woman ‘denied a termination’ dies in hospital

This is a sad case of a woman denied an abortion in Ireland, where their abortion laws are so out of date with human rights.

The lady, Savita Halappanavar (31), a dentist, was seventeen weeks pregnant but had bad back pain so she went to hospital, were they found she was fully dilated and the waters broke, which meant the baby would not live.

But the doctors said under the law they could do nothing as it was a Catholic country, they did nothing and she died.

Full story at the Irish Times

After asking for an abortion, the doctor said, because the fetal heartbeat was still present and they were told, “this is a Catholic country”.

On the  Tuesday morning, the ward rounds and the same discussion. The consultant said it was the law, that this is a Catholic country. Savita [a Hindu] said: ‘I am neither Irish nor Catholic’ but they said there was nothing they could do.

That evening she developed shakes and shivering and she was vomiting. She went to use the toilet and she collapsed. There were big alarms and a doctor took bloods and started her on antibiotics.

She spent a further 2½ days “in agony” until the fetal heartbeat stopped.

The dead fetus was removed and Savita was taken to the high dependency unit and then the intensive care unit, She stayed stable on Friday but by 7pm on Saturday they said her heart, kidneys and liver weren’t functioning.

She was very critically ill and she died of septicemia on the 28th.

How many more have to die or go abroad or a back street clinic for an abortion. Ireland may have a government but its the Catholic church who are in charge.

  1. That is absolutely sickening. The poor woman! I love Ireland but I could never live there.

  2. Shame on Ireland – the Catholic Church should be held responsible for her death.

    • They should be Barb but never will be, just the same as their pedo priests

      • Our PM has just agreed to a Royal High Commission investigation into pedo priests here in Oz – about b*****y time. They have got away with too much for too long. Wish it would happen in Ireland, but we know it never will.

      • Barb you will find i have three or four posts about pedo priests in Ireland and they have been jailed etc, it was and still is big news.
I heard about the priests in OZ a few years ago as well as the US and Canada.

  3. That’s awful. This is the case of a choice, the baby or the mother. In the hierarchy of things, the mother should live. The doctor murdered the mother.

  4. You get treated better in bloody China. Stupid Irish.

    No offence.

  5. septicemia was the cause of this poor ladys death in ireland as far as i know .if you or other others on here want to check you will find that about 7 pregnant women die every WEEK in the uk .as for the texan,, health care in the us of a can only be described as a crime against the poor. howorth, your comment about the irish was child like and of the dumbist kind i can only assume you have had a labotomy

  6. no one speaks for the children. Chop them up, sell the pieces . It’s the great tragedy of western civilization.
